As the capital of the region of West Flanders, during the Middle Ages, Bruges held an important trade position and it’s thanks to its prosperous merchant history that the architecture is so breath-takingly beautiful. In fact the historic centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and boasts some of the best preserved medieval architecture in the whole of Europe. Narrow cobbled streets with idyllically quaint terraced houses lend this lovely little city a fairytale air.
What with the incredible architecture, you are going to be spoiled for sites when you visit Bruges. In particular it is the religious architecture and merchant buildings that will really catch your eye such as the iconic Belfry in Grote Markt, one of the main market places. Wander around the quieter side streets, but do take the time to go museum hopping too. The Groeninge Museum is the city’s museum of fine arts and features many pieces from iconic Flemish masters. Other top museums include the delightfully named Choco-Story Museum, and the Diamant Museum which includes demonstrations and historical facts about the diamond.
Thanks to its compact size, especially if you stay near the centre in Bruges, getting around is a breeze. You can pretty much walk everywhere, and the streets are really cycle friendly. So take a good pair of walking shoes, find out about bike hire and avoid taking taxis during your trip.
