Close enough to enjoy a mini break, interesting enough for longer holidays, the Belgium city of Bruges is a hugely popular tourist destination, and if you are looking for a step back in time, then it could be the spot for you.

Located in Flanders which is the northern part of Belgium, this compact city is completely charming and one of the country’s biggest tourist draws. If you’ve been looking for a city break that is just a little bit different from the norm, then you should turn your gaze towards Bruges – you’re not going to regret it! If you need any more convincing, read on for our top reasons to visit this lovely Belgian city.

The architecture

As the capital of the region of West Flanders, during the Middle Ages, Bruges held an important trade position and it’s thanks to its prosperous merchant history that the architecture is so breath-takingly beautiful. In fact the historic centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and boasts some of the best preserved medieval architecture in the whole of Europe. Narrow cobbled streets with idyllically quaint terraced houses lend this lovely little city a fairytale air.

The sites

What with the incredible architecture, you are going to be spoiled for sites when you visit Bruges. In particular it is the religious architecture and merchant buildings that will really catch your eye such as the iconic Belfry in Grote Markt, one of the main market places. Wander around the quieter side streets, but do take the time to go museum hopping too. The Groeninge Museum is the city’s museum of fine arts and features many pieces from iconic Flemish masters. Other top museums include the delightfully named Choco-Story Museum, and the Diamant Museum which includes demonstrations and historical facts about the diamond.

The size

Thanks to its compact size, especially if you stay near the centre in Bruges, getting around is a breeze. You can pretty much walk everywhere, and the streets are really cycle friendly. So take a good pair of walking shoes, find out about bike hire and avoid taking taxis during your trip.

The chocolate

Since it is a trip to Belgium after all, you can’t miss out on the opportunity to fill up on delicious and world-renowned Belgium chocolate. The standard is incredibly high and there are plenty of chocolate shops to choose from. Spend some time sampling and testing out various chocolate flavours for a trip that is going to be mouth-wateringly good. Many shops actually offer free samples to tempt you in so do take advantage of these!

Flying into Brussels and then using the excellent Belgian train service to get to Bruges is convenient and easy and what with loads of flights from UK airports, visiting Bruges really is a doddle. So for a cultural city break, why not check out visiting Bruges.
